IN THE CROSSING OF JACOB'S HANDS, WE SEE A PICTURE OF THE CROSS

1.    The sinner’s birth order is reversed when he or she trusts Jesus Christ, for it’s the second born whom God receives, not the firstborn.

2.    It is through the cross that God crucified the old nature and now sets aside the natural that He might establish the spiritual.

3.    When you are born again, God rearranges your spiritual “birth order.”

RECONCILIATION OF JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS

1. God’s will, not man’s, is controlling reality in every event.

2. The story of Joseph encourages us to recognise the sovereignty of God in the affairs of life and to trust His promises no matter how dark the day may be.

JOSEPH'S TWO SONS

1.  First son - Manasseh

Joseph named his son Manasseh because God made him forget the injustice of his brothers, the mistreatment he endured by Potiphar, and the years spent in an Egyptian jail for a crime he did not commit.

2. Second son - Ephraim

Joseph could have been bitter, hard and critical but he kept his heart from resentment and God blessed him with a new life with great authority.

 

It takes much more grace to serve God in prosperity than it does in a time of crisis.

 

THINGS TO DWELL ON

A. God has taught Joseph how to cope with success!
B. It is more difficult to handle success than it is to deal with failure. (Proverbs 27:21)
C. Joseph was a great leader, but his greatness was related to his humility.
D. The more a statesman is distinguished, the more laborious should he be for the public good.

3. The Speed of Trust 

Why did Pharaoh believe in Joseph's interpretation?

There must have been something stirring about Joseph's words.

 

WHAT WE CAN DRAW FROM THIS TODAY?

• Joseph’s marriage to a Gentile bride is a type of Christ’s marriage to the church during this age when His brothers after the flesh have rejected Him.
• The account of the king’s appointment of Joseph over all his kingdom continues to present a picture of Joseph that recalls the portrait of Adam in Genesis 1
• As Adam was made in God’s image to rule over all the land, so the king here gave Joseph his “signet ring” and dressed him in royal garments.

Joseph accomplishes all that Adam failed to do

Joseph put in place 4 point practical plan for Pharaoh

• Appoint a National Organiser to deal with this emergency. (v33)
• Appoint local commissioners. (v34)
• You need 20% tax on the harvest. Take one-fifth of each harvest for Pharaoh for the next seven years. (v35)
• Build Storage facilities (v36)

1. Resources without strategy leads to poverty

• He is Called, Character-driven, Calm and Competent

2. Your Calling Is Fulfilled in Somebody Else's Need

• Where was his calling fulfilled? It was in a need and for the good of others.

WISDOM TIP |  God added to Joseph's character and his competency so he could fulfil his calling.

THE RADICAL ELEVATION OF JOSEPH

GENESIS 41:1-36

1. THE TROUBLED KING (v1-8)

• This powerful, almost divine being, at the very peak of his earthly might; in spite of his power is troubled. 

 

 

2. THE PREPARED SERVANT (v 9-36)

• Every detail is worked out to bring Joseph for this moment, God has been preparing him for this.
• Joseph has matured, trouble has strengthened him, has deepened him.
• “I cannot do it” – In Hebrew it’s a one-word answer – Hebrew:(bil`adey) – not without, apart from, besides.
• God has not forgotten you, His preparing you. Because what is needed in your future will not only affect your life but the lives of many around you

The cupbearer forgot him, but God did not!

 

Two years later, God would use the cupbearer to help deliver Joseph from prison. Joseph would learn:

 

1. He would learn that God’s delays are not God’s denials

2. It’s through faith and patience that we inherit the promises (Heb. 6:12)

3. Being a servant precedes being a ruler

4. He was finally greatly exalted through his God-given ability to interpret dreams

RECAP |  Joseph demonstrates a character of extreme integrity and courage in the midst of temptations. God loves his people so much that he will protect them from unbearable temptation, he will provide a way of escape.

NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM TEMPTATION

Temptation is not sinned; sin comes in when we give in to temptation. We must realise our weakness and turn to God for strength.

GOD WILL NOT LEAVE HIS PEOPLE ALONE

The secret to resisting temptation is recognising the source of temptation and where we can find strength

GOD PROMISES TO GIVE HIS PEOPLE STRENGTH

It is not always easy to resist and flee temptation. It takes self-discipline to look for that "way-out" even in the midst of temptation and then to take it when it is found.

 

Temptation need never drive a wedge between believers and God

3. THE COAT WAS DESTROYED

Scattered threads, scattered dreams, scattered emotions, scattered desires. Both the coat and the threads of his life are scattered in all directions.

The Greek word translated “workmanship” is poiema, from which we derive our English word “poem.”

Our lives are the beautiful poetry written by God that will speak forth all that he desires in life. He also wants to use us as display cases for his artistry. According to this verse, believers are his workmanship, his masterpieces.

What made the difference?

What makes the difference when we go through a season of scattered threads - but God was with him.
